Tips for creating the perfect spring garden

spring garden 1Our team at Professionals Arbee Real Estate are often asked for advice about getting Bacchus Marsh homes presentable for sale, and tips for staging houses to appeal to more buyers during open homes.  However, lately there’s been a new trend of people asking for help.  It seems we all want the perfect spring garden, but very few of us are green thumbed enough to know where to start.

We thought we’d take the opportunity to share a few of our top tips for helping you to create a beautifully blooming garden in the spring time.

  • It may not be a delight for all the senses, and if you’re about to host an open home you will no doubt opt to skip this step, but fertilising all plants and lawns that are showing signs of growth will certainly improve their health as the season continues.
  • Prune back any plants that have flowered during winter and the first weeks of spring.
  • Get weeding.  A simple tidy up will help bring out the colours and beauty of the plants that are supposed to be there, while making sure they’re not suffocated by the nasty ones that aren’t meant to be.
  • If your garden beds are looking a little bare, or you’re sick of all the weeding required to keep them looking tidy, spring’s a great time to renew the mulch.  This will give your gardens an instant lift.
  • Spring is a fantastic time to plant all your favourite herbs.  Some choose to create a special herb garden, while others like to begin with potted herbs.  These will often be beautifully fragrant, and of course will add flavour to your cooking and spring salads.
  • While you’re planting, don’t forget to buy some seeds for flowers and vegetables that you want to enjoy over summer.  Remember, BBQ season is not far away, so if you love the taste of a home-grown salad, now’s your chance to get it cracking.
  • Composting is a great way to reduce waste while converting things like food scraps into a really useful product that’s fantastic for your garden.   If you haven’t already, now’s a great time to start your own compost pile or get a compost bin.
