Easy Ways to Save Electricity at your Bacchus Marsh Home

A few Bacchus Marsh residents are concerned about the rising costs of energy use and so in today’s blog I thought I would provide some easy tips on how to cut down on home energy use.

  • First off, try to cut down on the amount of air conditioning/heating that your home uses. If you’re cold you can put more clothes on or use these handy hints to warm the house up. If your home is too warm, consider getting insulation or make sure the home is well ventilated.
  • When you invest in new home appliances, make sure they are energy-efficient. Some appliances use more energy than others, so when you are buying a new product, check its energy star rating. It might cost a little bit more for an energy efficient product, but it could end up saving you a lot of money in the long run, especially if it is a regularly used appliance.
  • Use appliances less. This goes for washing machines, dryers and dishwashers in particular. For example if you haven’t got a full load of clothes, then don’t do a wash yet.
  • Turn off the lights. If you’re not using the light in a room then you’re wasting energy. On this note, it’s also a good idea to use fluorescent light bulbs instead of incandescent as they are more energy-efficient.
  • Turn off “standby” appliances. You know the ones, the TV, VCR or computer. Sometimes we leave these on for weeks without even using them and all the while they are using power, so next time you turn off the TV turn it right off instead of leaving it on standby.

Many of you will already know these tips on saving electricity but we often forget to use them. If you have your own tips on saving electricity around the home I’d love to hear them, so please leave a comment if you have any more.
